Day 3 $25 Food Challenge
Before I get into Day Three, I have to say something about the comments I've gotten from this blog: Thank you, they are great comments. The comments made me think about this challenge in a different way. I have to admit my wife Karen does most of the shopping, but when we were living in two different cities (for nearly 3 years) I did my own shopping.
When I did my own shopping, I picked up things that were pre-packaged and easy to make. Of course it wasn't cheap, but it worked with my schedule. At the time I worked at night (2pm to 11pm) and I lived 45 minutes from work. Taking time to prepare a meal wasn't always easy but not impossible.
Since Karen and I work in TV, we have crazy schedules. This challenge has helped me (us) re-examine how we shop on a weekly basis, so again thank you for the comments.
As far as what I ate today: This time I got some eggs, so I had one for breakfast, along with a banana and an english muffin not bad. For lunch, I went "old school" and I had Peanut Butter and Jelly. For Dinner, I picked up ground beef (20% fat; had to buy it was cheaper than the lean meat) with a can of collard greens I picked from Aldi. Missed out on snacking and a lot of fruit. I was a little hungry when I went to bed.

Hey Christian,
You're probably finished with the challenge by now, but just a few more tips.
At Aldi, the Mama Cossi French Bread Pizza is $1.19. You get two nice sized pieces. Add some extra oregano or Italian seasoning from your cupboard and it's pretty good. A box of 24 Brenner tea bags is 1.19. The bags are quart sized (large bags) so you can make iced tea. Pour up an 8-12 oz glass and add either a packet of Splenda or tsp sugar if you like it sweet. Comes out to about 5 cents a glass.
If you like fish, a 14oz can of pink salmon is $1.69. Mix with 1 egg, tbsp flour or bread crumbs, chopped onion and seasoning, divide into 4 patties and sautee. Serve with green beans or rice.
Also, instant oatmeal with banana or raisins is inexpensive. I wanted to buy yogurt, but the inexpensive brands are full of sugar.
I'm starting the challenge tomorrow. These are a few of the meals I'll be having. Great exercise. I can shop anywhere and buy anything I want, but this will take some creativity! I'm sure I'll loss a pound or two.
I heard about the challenge late and think I'm going to try it next week.
one of my wonderings - often at the grocery store you can find a big bunch of romaine, spinach or other salad greens for about $1-2 a bunch. Salad can be filling and inexpensive, though I recognize it's not high in calories. Maybe a bit could be worked in?
