DTV Blog/Soft Test is coming Nov. 12th
Welcome to my Digital TV/Tech/Whatever I am doing this week Blog. This is just another way to let our viewers know what is going on.
For the next few months I will mainly focus on the DTV transition. If you have questions, comments (and even answers to questions I can't answer) please let me know.
Okay lets move on: tomorrow on Chicago Tonight at 7pm on Channel 11 we will be talking about the "soft" test that is going to take place the next day, November 12th at 6:58am and 5:23pm. During those time (for 5 minutes each time) most stations in the Chicago Area (including Channel 11) will shut off their analog signal. In place of the picture you will see a graphic that will tell you that your "Over the Air Analog" TV is not compliant. So please tune in to check out the story, and fine out what you need to do.

Next week we will tackle the DTV transition again when we sit down and speak FCC Commissioner Deborah Tate, who will visit Chicago next week to hold a series of town hall meeting on the issue.

I got up at an unholy hour to test my tv this morning, and I got the message that my tv is not ready. I was slightly surprised. I don't have satellite or cable; I don't watch enough tv to warrant it (just PBS, mostly). But I don't have rabbit-ear antennae on my set, or anything on my roof. I live in some technological parallel universe. I just get basic reception when I plug my TV into an outlet. Also, the tv is new-ish (about 3 or so years), a Toshiba, and has all of these "digital" logos on it. So I assumed I was safe. But I got the screen of death this morning.
I've signed up for my converter box coupons. I then looked at the list of eligible converter boxes, and, wow, that narrows it down. Like I said, I do not watch a lot of tv, so I have no idea which converter box to get. Is having a pseudo-digital tv going to be an issue? Do all converter boxes work with all tv's? Do I need to write down all of my set information before heading off to the store for a converter box? Does anyone else in the universe watch tv without cable, satellite or rabbit-ears? I don't think it has anything to do with my location, since I have moved, and had fine reception at my previous place too.
