Divine Dance

Hema Rajagopalan's dancers cast a spell on audiences with their mesmerizing dances of devotion, rich in the religious and mythological heritage of southern India.

Since founding Natya Dance Theatre in 1975, Rajagopalan has introduced audiences from Chicago and beyond to the thousands-year-old Bharata Natyam dance tradition of southern India. It's part theatre, part religious ceremony, and completely thrilling.

In the thirty years since its founding, the dance troupe has perfected the expressive form that incorporates abstract movements and narrative pantomime. The result is a performance that is acrobatic yet delicate, hypnotic and – yes – educational.
