Ancient Rhythm

Balancing grace and power, JASC Tsukasa Taiko creates driving rhythms that reflect the religious rites and military uses that have left their mark on Japanese drumming.

With perfectly synchronized movements, drummers from the Japanese American Service Committee's Tuskasa Taiko group continue the long legacy and rich heritage of Japanese drumming, while evolving the taiko art form.

Though the group style of taiko drumming is new, created in the middle of the 20th century to reflect the influence of jazz on Japanese music, the drum itself is timeless. Used in ancient sacred ceremonies and later to command troops in warfare, the traditional taiko (which means simply "drum" in Japanese) has been adapted to modern uses while retaining its iconic look.

Under the guidance of head instructor Hide Yoshihashi, who founded the group in 1996, students learn about Japanese culture and strengthen their community while becoming top-notch performers.
