Arts Across Illinois

Can art change lives? Phil Ponce explores the power of art in the upcoming episode of WTTW-TV's Arts Across Illinois airing on Friday, February 26 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 28 at 5:30 pm. Arts Across Illinois is underwritten by the Illinois Arts Council.

LIVING IN HARMONY

Marge Nykaza wanted to find a way to help the homeless. She found it through song -- creating a choir that truly gives Chicago’s homeless something to sing about. Listen to the inspiring sounds of Harmony, Hope and Healing.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI

The Central Illinois town of Monmouth had problems with teenage taggers. The Executive Director of the Buchanan Center for the Arts came up with a creative solution, turning a local eyesore into a work of art. Find out how one community learned to love aerosol art.

POETIC PURPOSE

Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist Judith Valente has had a successful career telling other people’s stories. But it was poetry that helped her discover and share her own. Find out how poetry profoundly changed her life, both professionally and personally.

SIGNS OF LIFE

Evanston photographer Jane Fulton Alt likes to say her art is about the cycle of life. Her photos of Mexico grace celebrity chef Rick Bayless's Chicago restaurants. In 2005, she volunteered to accompany displaced residents back to their homes following Hurricane Katrina, chronicling the experience in photos. Through her eyes, we gain a fuller understanding of the epic loss this community endured.
