About the Senate Race
The U.S. Senate contest in Illinois is one of 35 Senate races in the Nov. 4 election. The winner will serve a six-year term from Jan. 3, 2009, until Jan 3, 2015. The current composition of the Senate going into the election is 49 Republicans, 49 Democrats and two independents, who both caucus with Democrats for a 51 to 49 majority. Of the seats up for election, 23 are held by Republicans and 12 by Democrats. |
