POSITION: WFMT Relevant Tones Internship
Thank you for your interest in becoming an intern at 98.7WFMT, Chicago's Classical Music Experience. The program is designed to provide meaningful hands-on experience in radio broadcasting while accommodating the needs and wishes of the participants.
This spring, WFMT will launch Relevant Tones, one of the world's only weekly programs dedicated to contemporary music. Hosted by Seth Boustead (Chicago-based composer and Director of Access Contemporary Music), Relevant Tones is a weekly exploration of a vibrant and continuing classical music tradition as it thrives in the 20th and 21st centuries.
From up-and-coming firebrands to established artists, this program celebrates the dynamic, diverse, and incredibly germane output of modern-day composers.
- 98.7WFMT offers internships year-round on a rolling basis. Length of internship and hours per week are negotiable, though applicants should generally be available most weekdays at 10 AM to help with the show.
- Interns must stay for the length of a semester or summer.
- This is an unpaid internship.
- We will work with schools for student interns receiving credit, but receiving credit is not required.
Students of any major are encouraged to apply but knowledge of and passion for classical music & radio is essential. Music experience is preferred, especially if you have band, orchestra or choir experience. Good written and verbal communications skills are important. Familiarity with web editing, social networking and audio editing is also a plus.
Possible learning opportunities include, but are not limited to: Writing for the Relevant Tones blog, monitoring and responding to emails, booking guests, maintaining the Relevant Tones web site, collecting and researching music to fit a weekly theme, editing audio (for broadcast and the web), pitching ideas for audio segments, archive updating, assisting with on-air pledge drives, marketing. While interns will work primarily with the Relevant Tones producers, they are also encouraged to shadow other producers, on-air hosts and other staff.
Most work will take place at WTTW studios located on the northwest side of Chicago, however interns may need to visit libraries or other institutions as part of their research assignments. Interns may also accompany and assist the production team on local field shoots.
Interested students should email their resume and cover letter expressing their qualifications and interest in the internship to: email@example.com. Please reference "WFMT Relevant Tones Internship/Attn: Jesse McQuarters" in subject line of all correspondence to ensure proper routing.
Somewhere in your cover letter please write about some of your favorite radio shows/podcasts and why you like them (they do not have to be on WFMT). In addition, please state your preferred start date (approximate is ok). Optional: Supporting materials including but not limited to audio clips, newspaper clips, or links to online media.
Candidates may also fax or mail their resume and cover letter with optional extra materials directly to:
