REPORTS TO:   Senior Vice President of Production and Community Engagement

MINIMUM EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:  Minimum five years as Community Engagement/Community Affairs Director or representative for non-profit organization, foundation, corporation or broadcaster, preferably in the Chicago market, and experienced in working with diverse constituencies

SKILLS REQUIRED:  Candidate must have strong leadership experience and possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills, including proficiency in writing, use of social media, and public speaking. Need a critical thinker, capable of developing, managing, advancing, and evaluating station community engagement strategies and projects. The ideal candidate will be adept at using quantitative and qualitative methods to measure success of station community projects. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required. Budget management or previous media production skills a plus.  Fluency in Spanish highly desired.

JOB PURPOSE:  The Director of Community Engagement will lead WTTW’s efforts to build new partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with community leaders, nonprofit organizations, foundations, educators, and the business community, in order to increase awareness of station initiatives in service to the diverse communities of the Chicago market.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interface with and convene leaders of the community, educators, and the public to support and enhance WTTW collective impact efforts, particularly in early childhood literacy and “cradle to career” programs that increase high school graduation rates.
  • Attend meetings and ascertain community leaders’ input on a regular basis to track community issues and needs.
  • Design, manage, or contribute to all station community engagement events and activities and make recommendations regarding same to senior management.
  • Supervise Community Engagement staff and interns.
  • Work with Development and Sales staffs to obtain government, corporate, and foundation grants and support.  Assure funder recognition is correct, properly branded, and scheduled.
  • Regularly write and report on station community efforts to public media organizations including PBS, CPB, and other public stations, and for inclusion in WTTW’s public FCC file.
  • As required, interact with and provide information on station community activities to the WWCI Board of Trustees, WWCI Community Engagement Committee, WTTW Community Advisory Board, senior management, and the editorial staff of Chicago Tonight
  • Oversee and collaborate with WTTW production personnel, online producers and designers, and creative services staff in creation of community content spots, PSAs, and interstitial material.
  • Assist non-profit organizations in publicizing their work or activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Please Note:  This position is currently a contract position approved for a period of two years.  It is WTTW’s intention, however, to make it a Full-time, ongoing staff position pending proper funding.
