How do kids earn money? Some baby-sit, others wash cars, rake leaves, walk dogs or sell cookies.

An entrepreneur is someone who invents an idea for goods or services and then thinks of ways to earn money by selling them.

Some famous entrepreneurs include:

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft
Ben and Jerry, creators of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream
Ray Kroc, who began McDonald’s restaurants
Walt Disney, founder of the company that makes movies & theme parks
Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb

You can be an entrepreneur, too! Think of something - a good or service - you can provide to others. Then think of a way you can sell it. First, you will need to figure out how much it will cost you to buy the supplies you will need. The best way to do this is create a list of expenses. Next, calculate how much you will charge your customers. What is a fair price that will cover your expenses but allow you to earn a profit?

When you are ready, buy your supplies. Don’t forget to advertise… with fliers, signs, phone calls or e-mails.

Then you are ready for the fun…making people happy and supplying them with what they want.
