Word on the Street
It's not a side of Chicago that shows up in John Hughes movies. But with cameras in hand, these teenage Chicago filmmakers
are telling their own stories of adolescence.
From its home base on the West Side,
Street Level Youth Media has been teaching kids video and computer skills for more than 10 years. Flush with video and audio equipment, students paint
intimate portraits of the victories and failures in their lives.
These honest videos don't shy away from difficult topics, tackling issues of family, race, gentrification and violence. Through
their work, kids learn a lot about themselves and their communities, and how they can work to improve both.
