WTTW, America’s most watched public television station, announced today that Architect Michael Graves: A Grand Tour, a 30-minute documentary which premiered on WTTW on March 22, has been recognized with a Silver Plaque from the 2012 Hugo Television Awards in the category of Documentary: History/Biography. The program was hosted by WTTW’s popular TV tour guide Geoffrey Baer.
Architect Michael Graves: A Grand Tour was produced by Daniel Andries, written by Daniel Andries and Geoffrey Baer, edited by Paul Thornton, and featured camera work by Matt Howe, Tim Boyd and Daniel Andries. Marc Hoppe provided the audio, and the Associate Producer was Liz Reeves.
The film told the inspiring story of acclaimed architect Michael Graves, this year’s winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for Classical and Traditional Architecture. His name is synonymous with the stylish yet affordable household products bearing his name at Target stores, but Graves is also a renowned architect who took the architecture world by storm in the 1980s with buildings that broke with orthodox modernism and took a sometimes whimsical approach to classical forms. After a potentially fatal illness that left him partially paralyzed, he embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career -- designing hospital furniture and homes for wounded war veterans, with the goal to transform traditionally cold institutions into environments that promote healing.
Those interested in watching Architect Michael Graves: A Grand Tour can visit the program’s companion website, wttw.com/graves, where they can also view a photo slideshow, watch web-exclusive video, learn about post-modernism, and trace a timeline of Graves’ career.
The 2012 Hugo Television Awards will be given out on April 19 at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel Chicago.
