Join WTTW and Openlands on Wednesday, October 8 at 6:00 pm for the Chicago premiere of the new documentary From Rails to Trails, narrated by actor Edward Norton. The in-person screening will be followed by a discussion with the film's director and executive producer.
From Rails to Trails is the story of one of the most unlikely social movements in American history: the battle to convert thousands of miles of abandoned railroads into trails for cycling and walking. Facing fierce opposition and legal challenges from private property owners, advocates fought to reclaim these corridors for the public, creating a national network of scenic, car-free paths. It is based on Peter Harnik’s 2021 book, From Rails to Trails: The Making of America’s Active Transportation Network.
Following the film, Michael S. Davidson, President and CEO of Openlands will moderate a panel discussion with Dan Protess, the film’s director/producer, and Peter Harnik, the co-founder of the Rails to Trails Conservancy and the film’s executive producer. The panel will discuss how community activists, visionary leaders, and passionate citizens fought to turn defunct railways into vibrant spaces for walking, biking, and recreation.
From Rails to Trails airs Monday, October 20 at 9:00 pm on WTTW.
