Masterpiece has announced the full cast for their upcoming adaptation of the classic Henry Fielding novel The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling. We already knew Solly McLeod would star as the title character alongside Sophie Wilde as Sophia Western and that the series was being led by veteran screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes. Now we have learned that Ted Lasso's Emmy Award-winning Hannah Waddingham (who has also appeared in an episode of Midsomer Murders) will play the villainous Lady Bellaston.
In addition to Waddingham, Doctor Who's Pearl Mackie has signed on as Sophia's maid Honour. James Fleet, who is no stranger to adaptations of novels and has appeared in a whole host of shows including Bridgerton, Death in Paradise, Unforgotten, and the upcoming season of All Creatures Great and Small, is Tom's adoptive father, Squire Allworthy. Tom's grandfather, Squire Western, is played by Alun Armstrong (Downton Abbey, Prime Suspect: Tennison, Dark Angel) while Shirley Henderson is Sophia's Aunt Harriet and Julian Rhind-Tutt is Harriet's husband Fitzpatrick.
Among the other actors are Felicity Montagu (Cousin Prue in The Durrells in Corfu) and Dean Lennox Kelly (Passport's Jamestown). Many of them have worked with the screenwriter Hughes before (and with each other on separate projects), so it's sure to be a tight-knit cast.
