The legendary Parisian detective Jules Maigret is returning to TV. Masterpiece has announced a new series simply called Maigret by the production company behind All Creatures Great and Small and Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light. While there have been numerous versions of Maigret in every form of media, the character originated in the books of crime reporter Georges Simenon – and there are plenty of those for material: 75 novels and 28 short stories.
The title character will be played by Benjamin Wainwright, who has appeared in such WTTW shows as World on Fire, Endeavour, and Unforgotten. His wife, Madame Louise, is played by Stefanie Martini, the star of Prime Suspect: Tennison. "Les Maigrets," Maigret's team of detectives, is made up of Blake Harrison (Stan in World on Fire), Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok (appearances in Shakespeare & Hathaway and Van der Valk), and Rob Kazinsky. Nathalie Armin (Magpie Murders) is the prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel.
