'Patience' Recap: Season 2 Episode 7

A monk is found kneeling before an altar in his monastery. But he’s not praying; he’s dead. Lucas Drummond was stabbed from the front by a cylindrical blade, likely a nearby candle spike. But it has been wiped clean of blood and fingerprints, seemingly by Lucas himself, given the blood pattern on his robe.

Lucas was found by the novice who opens the chapel every morning. Father Colin, the abbott of St. John’s, explains that Lucas only transferred to his monastery two months ago. He had previously been at a monastery in the Hebrides. There is no record of a “Lucas Drummond” existing outside the monasteries.

The detectives learn that Father Colin was at the Hebrides monastery with Lucas for ten years but neglected to mention it. He insists he knows little of Lucas, although Lucas sometimes spoke of a woman named Katie as a soul mate. 

The monastery in the Hebrides shares that Lucas was expelled and sent to St. John’s in York to “atone.” Perhaps that explains the weeks-old scarring from lashes on his back – a physical form of penitence?

Pressed once again, Father Colin says that Lucas claimed to have visions, but the Vatican investigated and concluded that he was a fake. Father Colin believed in Lucas, however, and so invited him to St. John’s to take refuge after his expulsion. But Lucas faced troubles there from the start, including an inverted pentagram drawn on his cell door. An older monk, Swavek, says Lucas allowed Satan to enter the monastery. Father Colin dismisses this as dementia. Some of the other monks say Lucas was a saint.

There was an outside fundamentalist Catholic group called Ultio Dei that had been inveighing against Lucas online. Ultio Dei are in the police archives for various claims of harassment. And one online post, from a “Zephaniah,” came from St. John’s IP address.

There’s only one shared computer at the monastery with sign-up logs for use. The logs show that “Zephaniah” is the young monk Joe. He says that he at first admired Lucas, but one day followed him and saw him meet with a woman outside the monastery. He was making a mockery of their faith, so Joe drew the pentagram on Lucas’ cell and also allowed a group of Ultio Dei followers into the monastery. They whipped Lucas’ back.

The address where Joe saw Lucas meet a woman has a “Katie Morgan” listed as a tenant – Lucas’ “soul mate?” But her roommate Joanne says she hasn’t seen Katie for days, and that Katie struggles with drugs. Katie had an ex-boyfriend named Lucas Haynes who came looking for her recently; they fought. He seemed like a bad man, Joanne says.

Lucas Haynes changed his name to Lucas Drummond in 2010, before he joined the monastery in the Hebrides. He had some violent crimes in his past. 

Jake thinks Katie might be hidden in the monastery, since one of the other monks said Lucas was caught taking extra food from the kitchen. Swavek, the older monk who Father Colin says has dementia, recognizes Katie: this is the devil he said Lucas brought into St. John’s. Patience notes from an old map of the monastery that part of it is no longer there; Father Colin explains that it was bombed during the war and is now just part of the library. 

The detectives explore the little-used upper floors of the library and note scuffs on the floor in front of a bookcase. It’s a secret door. In the chambers behind it, they find Katie in a locked room with the key outside it. 

She explains that Lucas locked her in with her permission: she was trying to get off drugs. Her roommate Joanne is her dealer and didn’t want her to stop using; Lucas was helping Katie. They dated long ago but have just been friends since he became a monk. He had a temper, but never with Katie, and his heart was in the right place. She hadn’t seen him for 15 years until he came to her apartment recently. She still wears a necklace with half a trinket; she gave Lucas the other half.

All this talk of soul mates is worrying Patience, who has come to regret breaking up with Elliot. When she admits this to her autism support group, they mostly encourage her to tell Elliot her true feelings. 

The police arrest Joanne for being a drug dealer. The detectives find that a doctor at a hospital where Katie worked in 2009 died after an attack, and Katie was listed as a witness. A locket with half a trinket that matches Katie’s own was found in his fist, suggesting he ripped it off his assailant. But Katie said she didn’t see anything during the assault.

Now she admits that the doctor had a reputation for being handsy. One night, he forced himself on her, but Lucas appeared to pick her up and attacked the doctor in a rage, accidentally killing him.

The doctor had a younger brother named Leo whose life derailed after his brother’s death; he did stints in prison for minor crimes. The detectives recognize him as the person who delivers food to the monastery. 

They confront him there and he grabs a canister of gas from his cart before running into the chapel and locking the door. All the monks are inside. Patience uses her memory of the monastery map to lead the detectives to two other possible entrances to the chapel. Jake tries to talk Leo down as he pours gas around the monks, whom he has forced into a group, and pulls out a lighter. Frankie sneaks up from behind as Leo accuses the monks of harboring a murderer. He explains that, when Lucas saw him approaching to kill him, Lucas asked Leo to forgive him, and then wiped the spike after Leo killed him, granting him mercy.

Frankie tackles Leo from behind and Patience rushes in to stamp out his flaming lighter.

The police’s communications expert, Zinzi, has been trying to improve their image, since public confidence is at an all-time low. She has booked them a spot at the popular local Viking festival. Following the popularity of a social media video featuring Patience, she has also booked a spot onstage for Patience and written her a speech.

But Patience struggles to get words out when the time comes; it can’t help that she has noticed Elliot is there. Baxter gets onstage to take over, but Patience steels herself and starts giving her own speech instead of Zinzi’s. She’s grateful to be part of a supportive team at the police – people like Jake, who calmly quiets a heckler in the crowd. 

Patience looks out into the crowd and sees the same woman she has seen with Elliot before pull him away.
