A new reimagining of the popular series Monarch of the Glen is coming to PBS and WTTW via Masterpiece. Whereas the original series followed a young restaurateur brought home to his ancestral estate in Scotland, the new version centers on a lawyer, Isla Campbell, who returns to the Highlands to find a large debt and a brother intent on saving the home.
The original Monarch of the Glen ran in the early 2000s for seven seasons. It was loosely based on Compton Mackenzie's Highland Novels, which were set decades earlier in the Scottish Highlands. Its title came from the first of those novels, which in turn was named after a painting of a majestic red deer.
Casting for the new Monarch of the Glen, which is filming now, has been announced, and features plenty of Scottish actors. Among the familiar faces are Julia Brown as Isla, whom you may recognize as Lois in World on Fire. Phyllis Logan was Mrs. Hughes in Downton Abbey, Mrs. Austen in Miss Austen, Maggie in Guilt, and the titular The Puzzle Lady, among other roles. Rishi Nair, fresh off the end of his role as Alphy in Grantchester, appears as the businessman Daniel. Gordon Kennedy and John Gordon Sinclair may both be familiar from various one-off roles in mysteries and other series.
Monarch of the Glen is expected in 2027. See first looks of the cast in costume below.
