The stuck-in-routine, unprepared Phileas Fogg decides to take a wager to become the first person to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days and immediately runs into trouble with his companions, the valet Passepartout and journalist Fix.

When an inmate at Leonard's prison turns up dead and Leonard's cellmate is blamed, Leonard enlists Will and Geordie to investigate shady occurences at the prison. 

Matthew Aylward shows up in a surprising way in Poplar, and Trixie finds her view of him shifting. A complication interrupts a familial adoption, while Nancy tries to assert her own authority. 

The bishop appoints a new curate to Grantchester, but no one is in the mood to welcome him, given that he's Leonard's replacement. A student protest gone wrong leads Will and Geordie to investigate, and into an argument. 

Sister Frances tries to increase outreach to Poplar's South Asian community as a young mother struggles with a childhood trauma. Trixie takes a stand after witnessing a difficult situation, causing consternation in the community.

As Leonard goes to trial, a bank robbery serves as a distraction for Geordie and Will, the latter of whom wants to testify on behalf of Leonard but is warned against it because of the possible repercussions for himself. 

Sister Julienne fears that something is wrong with a mother's first child while Trixie helps Matthew more and more with his new baby. Shelagh and Ann tend to a young pregnant woman and her protective mother. 

When some American servicemen are brought into the station for trespassing in a quarry, a murder investigation suddenly opens up, while Will tries to deal with his stepsister and Leonard and Daniel learn more about each other. 

New midwives-in-training arrive at Nonnatus, including the chatty and easily underestimated Nancy. Cyril makes a big decision, and Dr. Turner and Nurse Crane help a young man struggling against the strictures of society. 

Leonard's escalating tribulations place Will in a difficult moral position, while a council election precipitated by a sudden death turns nasty—and an investigation is opened into the death. 

A woman's complications during her pregnancy lead Lucille and Shelagh down a research path, while Sister Hilda and Dr. Turner try to uncover what's behind a slew of perplexing ailments in a young woman.

Will ends up in the middle of a dispute over an adopted child that becomes more serious when someone turns up dead. Leonard finds himself in ever-worsening trouble after receiving some blackmail.
