“We’re not going to be able to food pantry our way out of this crisis,” said the director of one pantry. “The federal freeze is going to catapult hunger in a way that we didn’t really even see in COVID.” 

The massive tax break and spending cuts bill currently working through Congress contains provisions that would be “catastrophic” to food assistance programs, says the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which helps feed people in need.

Fight2Feed partners with dozens of Chicago area food organizations to bring in food and send out meals to those in need with the help of volunteers. 

“We’re just trying to provide hope and dignity,” says Farhan Ahmed, a co-founder and president of Chi-Care, which brings restaurant meals and other basic necessities to unhoused Chicagoans and others in need where they live.
