Eliza and William confront an imminent major change in their relationship while Eliza tries to find out who tried to kill her rival detective, Patrick Nash, and ends up in danger herself. 

The author Anthony Horowitz adapted his own novel, Magpie Murders, for television, so the two versions share the same vision. But there are differences based on the differing mediums—we explain a few of them here. 

Annika and Morgan are both keeping their love lives secret from each other, while Annika investigates the death of a man at his 30th anniversary party on his own boat. 

Atticus Pünd follows a hunch and determines how Mary Blakiston died, while Susan thinks she has figured out who killed Alan Conway—and it's someone upsettingly close to her. 

When Eliza comes upon a murder scene arranged exactly like one in a novel by a popular mystery author, she convinces William to hire her as a consultant on the case. Meanwhile, William has a decision to make regarding his future.

Charles needs Susan to decide whether she will take over Clover Books from him, as she continues to learn more about Alan's death—and the real-life dramas he incorporated into his final novel. 

Patrick Nash has come to see Eliza as a rival undercutting his business and so wants to hire her by any means necessary. But Eliza refuses, instead competing with Nash to solve a case before him and prove herself. 

Annika turns to Michael for advice on her daughter as Morgan begins therapy, all while also investigating another murder, of the chemical analyst at a nonprofit fighting for contaminant-free water. 

Atticus Pünd continues to investigate the death of Sir Magnus Pye and his housekeeper Mary Blakiston, who opposed her son Robert's marriage to Joy Sanderling: a possible motive for murder? Susan continues looking for the final chapter of the mystery.

William and Moses reluctantly work together when Eliza comes under suspicion of a series of break-ins at the city mortuaries and has to go into hiding. Ivy also helps out Moses, while Eliza finds a new helpful accomplice. 

Morgan begins to think she is cursed because bad things keep happening to people around her, as she joins Annika and her team in investigating the murder of a teacher from a remote island with Viking history.

When a second death occurs in Saxby-on-Avon, Atticus Pünd decides to investigate. Meanwhile, outside the world of the novel, Susan searches for the final chapter of Magpie Murders and begins to suspect Alan's death wasn't a suicide. 

Eliza is hired to investigate the theft of a sketch by Charles Darwin from a natural history museum, but she eventually discovers that the case is much more of a puzzle than it initially appears.
