Louisa is determined to celebrate Gerry's birthday with a festive party, but Gerry is becoming a moody teenager and doesn't want all the fuss. Spyros is also in a glum mood, thought he won't tell anyone, not even Louisa, why.

The arrival of an Italian family on Corfu leaves Louisa jealous as they take up Spyros's time and leads to an argument between the two friends. Plus, Larry joins a volunteer fire brigade and Gerry meets a nature-loving girl.

While spending time in Athens, Larry sends along two people to stay with the rest of his family on Corfu. The guests couldn't be more opposite, and act as good and bad angels on Louisa as she tries to send to Gerry to school.

Louisa and Larry are away in England, where Larry feels at home amongst a group of bohemians and Louisa finds herself in several odd predicaments. Back on Corfu, Gerry begins a crusade on behalf of donkeys while Margo attempts to reconcile Turks and Greeks. 

Leslie is now only dating one girl, but one of his former girlfriends soon complicates the situation. The Durrells deal with a sad event that sends Louisa and Larry back to England, while Margo's old flame tries to win her back and Gerry examines insects.

The Durrells are back, and with Louisa, Larry, and Margo all taking a break from romance, you'd think there would be less tumult in their lives. But Leslie, of all people, is dating – three women at once. The rest of the family try to force him to choose one.
