Cushla and her family reckon with the fallout from a tragedy, and how wrapped up everyone is in it.

Cushla begins to realize how dangerous it is to be having an affair with Michael, even as she learns more about him and grows closer.

Cushla's affair with Michael deepens even as her mother Gina's alcoholism worsens. Cushla also continues to try to help the McGeowns, whose father can no longer work due to a beating.

Cushla is a Catholic schoolteacher in Northern Ireland during The Troubles who meets a handsome Protestant lawyer while tending bar at her brother's bar.
