Germany's invasion of Poland has everyone holding their breath and reassessing priorities, contemplating big decisions that could change their lives—but their lives will be changed by war no matter what.

Max and Oskar witness the death of the star of a film at its premiere, and quickly begin investigating it as a murder. Soon, another actress, a fanatical admirer, and an American senator are all involved in the case.

Eliza is upset that William is seeing Arabella, but she needs his help as she tries to claim an inheritance for an unknown heir and thus receive a sizable fee that could change her business prospects.

Mrs. Hall is set to meet—and reckon with—her estranged son, Edward. Siegfried takes charge of an eager young boy and shows him the work of a veterinarian while Tristan takes over housework, and Helen tries to engage with her own sister. 

Max enlists Clara to write a story to help with a case, turning also to his father and sister to play a role as he and Oskar set a trap for a burglar searching for hidden treasure who may also be a murderer.

Gerald is growing increasingly fond of Mrs. Hall, while Tristan is embarking upon his own relationship. James is beginning to be overwhelmed by tuberculosis testing, and is feeling the pull of military duty, to Helen's fear. 

With William out of town, Fitzroy turns to Eliza for help when he sees Phelps plant a stolen watch on someone. Eliza's investigation wraps her up in a gang war and internecine disagreements within a crime family. 

Max gets in trouble when he tries to help a disturbed veteran at a military hospital who believes he is cursed, and then apparently commits suicide. Oskar is investigating some odd burglaries, but agrees to help Max, too.

James and Helen debate the merits and dangers of tuberculosis testing while Tristan tries to start taking on more responsibility. Siegfried's war past comes back to him as he tries to treat a psychologically damaged horse.

Eliza and her rival Patrick Nash have both traveled to France to try to catch a notorious conman. Problem is, they both think they have the right man. Which one is right?

Susan Ryeland and Atticus Pünd will return in an adaptation of the Magpie Murders sequel Moonflower Murders, plus we have a new show starring Helena Bonham Carter and news about upcoming seasons of other favorite series. 

Oskar and Max wrap up their investigation into a series of murders that fascinates Max and repulses Oskar, causing sordid secrets to emerge from a radical fashion house in the process.

Tristan learns an important lesson when the dog of the daughter of Siegfried's veterinary rival has an emergency, while James and Siegfried adjust to working together as partners in a business and Helen and Mrs. Hall get used to sharing a home. 

When a series of robberies take place near a fine restaurant, Eliza is certain that the owner, an old school nemesis of hers, is involved. But William thinks Eliza's judgment is clouded by animosity from long ago.
