Sunny and Cassie work to identify a skeleton discovered off the side of an isolated British roadway, slowly narrowing down a time window for who the victim might be. 

As Alison Wilson continues to learn more about the fictions of her deceased husband, she loses track of what and who to believe. What was Alec's life actually like, how can she ever maintain faith in him – and how much should she tell her sons? 

A Ghanian immigrant family's bright future is complicated by a mysterious illness, and Lucille tries to help an old hoarder with an impressive past clean up her life. Meanwhile, Violet runs for town council and Fred fails to be supportive. 

When a woman shows up at Alison Wilson's door claiming to be the wife of Alison's husband after his death, Alison begins to investigate the life of the man with whom she spent twenty years of her life. Turns out he didn't just write fictions as a novelist and spy; he lived them. 

Two new nuns, one experienced and one freshly commissioned, arrive at Nonnatus House. New equipment triggers a delusional episode in Sister Monica Joan, Valerie deals with a crisis with legal complications, and a mother carries twins.

With the opening of the Great Exhibition approaching, Albert is working himself to death to insure its success. Palmerston once again makes an unpopular decision, Feo miscalculates in her schemes, and Sophie has an enormous decision to make. 

An incident in Athens leads to an international crisis that threatens to end Palmerston's political career, while Albert undertakes an ambitious project to host a grand exhibition in London, despite public disapproval and the possibility of failure.

When private sketches of Victoria and Albert at home are leaked to the public, Victoria suffers an image crisis. Things finally come to a head between Victoria and Feo, widening the rift between Victoria and Albert.

Victoria decides to visit Ireland, becoming the first English monarch to do so in centuries. Albert, of course, doubts that the trip will be effective, given that calls for Irish independence are increasing – and the disagreement affects their marriage.

A cholera outbreak strikes a neighborhood of London, and Victoria and Albert champion new scientific research to discover how the disease is spread. They do so separately, however, since they are not even on speaking terms as they continue to feud. 

The confines of a small island cause tensions to flare between Victoria and Albert and provide the perfect context for other noble intrigue, while Palmerston's enthusiastic welcoming of a democratic agitator to London in the queen's absence worries her.

As the Chartists prepare a mass demonstration on behalf of the working class, Victoria is forced to decide whether to trust her faith in the people or the concern of her advisors. Will Britain erupt in popular revolt like the other countries of Europe?

Victoria is back, but the queen's reign may be in danger. It's 1848, and liberal revolutions are sweeping away despots and the old order across Europe, starting with Victoria's sometime ally Louis Philippe of France. As Victoria faces popular unrest, a new political rival emerges. 

As Christmas approaches, the Nonnatus sisters are called back to the Mother House to elect a new Mother Superior. There, they care for newly arrived orphans from China as well as a pregnant woman who used to live there. Back in Poplar, Trixie returns and helps with a birth in an unusual place.
