Call the Midwife

A frightening event leads to a big change in Miss Higgins' life, while a patient has her own upending diagnosis. A woman prepares to have her fourth child and is happily independent but fears a social worker might interfere with her life. 

It's Easter in Poplar, and spring brings a new beginning for Nancy as she begins work as a midwife. Changes uncover a horrible story from the past, and a couple hopes that their second baby will fare better than their first. 

It's a busy holiday season at Nonnatus House. Lucille is marrying Cyril the day after Christmas, Mother Mildred is coming to visit, and the midwives have a bunch of expectant mothers to care for as the holidays approach.

Matthew Aylward shows up in a surprising way in Poplar, and Trixie finds her view of him shifting. A complication interrupts a familial adoption, while Nancy tries to assert her own authority. 

Sister Frances tries to increase outreach to Poplar's South Asian community as a young mother struggles with a childhood trauma. Trixie takes a stand after witnessing a difficult situation, causing consternation in the community.

Sister Julienne fears that something is wrong with a mother's first child while Trixie helps Matthew more and more with his new baby. Shelagh and Ann tend to a young pregnant woman and her protective mother. 

New midwives-in-training arrive at Nonnatus, including the chatty and easily underestimated Nancy. Cyril makes a big decision, and Dr. Turner and Nurse Crane help a young man struggling against the strictures of society. 

A woman's complications during her pregnancy lead Lucille and Shelagh down a research path, while Sister Hilda and Dr. Turner try to uncover what's behind a slew of perplexing ailments in a young woman.

Cyril, Lucille, and the Buckles help a family fallen on hard times, while Sister Frances seeks to help a woman who regrets the situation in which she finds herself and Trixie learns some upsetting news about the Lady Emily clinic. 

Sister Julienne sends Trixie to work at a posh private maternity clinic as part of a plan to aid Nonnatus House, to Dr. Turner's chagrin, while two neighbors go into labor at the same time but have vastly different experiences with their birthes.

The circus is coming to Poplar as the holidays approach, and the ringmaster's daughter is pregnant. Shelagh reconnects with a woman who has had many miscarriages but is pregnant once again, and Monica Joan has a fall.

Valerie is put in charge of her gran's care as she struggles with an illness while the midwives fight to prove their worth and save Nonnatus House, in the season finale of Call the Midwife.

McNulty must help a woman whose husband is a drunk, but the young doctor has his own issues, which worry Sister Frances. Trixie helps a blind mother who rejects any attempt at help and is in a spat with her sister.

The Turners' adoption of Mae hits a difficult obstacle, while a relative of Valerie's faces a sorrowful tragedy after the birth of her third child. Fred works to put on Poplar's annual horticultural show.

Sister Hilda and Nurse Crane have differing opinions about the involvement of a husband in his wife's pregnancy, while Sisters Julienne and Frances become involved in a middle-aged woman's life and end up re-examining their views of themselves.
