A drama about a robbery that was the largest-scale in the world at the time is coming to WTTW and PBS via Masterpiece. The Gold is about the 1983 robbery of the Brink's-Mat security depot near London's Heathrow Airport, when the armed thieves inadvertently stumbled upon £26 million of gold bullion. Selling the gold involved an international money laundering operation, which is explored in the second season of The Gold, which is soon to premiere in the United Kingdom and will also be coming to WTTW and PBS. The investigation into that operation was the longest and most expensive in the history of London's Metropolitan Police.
The Gold features a number of stars familiar to PBS viewers: Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville, The Long Song's Jack Lowden, Guilt's Emun Elliott, Sanditon's Charlotte Spencer, and Prime Suspect: Tennison's Stefanie Martini (who will also appear in the upcoming Masterpiece mystery Maigret). The Gold is written by Guilt creator Neil Forsyth.
We don't yet have a premiere date, but we do have a look at some of the characters via photos, below.
