Every month, people from Chicago's hospitality industry share recommendations for food, drink, ingredients, and more as part of our Chef Picks series.
Chef Namhee Kim of Daebak Korean Barbecue in Wicker Park loves K-Pop, so much so that she owns a K-Pop gift shop in Chinatown near the original location of her KBBQ spot. At Daebak, along with the meaty menu of brisket, short rib, and pork belly grilled at the table, there’s a wall of K-Pop stars’ autographs from visiting boy and girl super-bands like GOT7 and Ateez, presumably signed after downing orders of cheesy buldak, tteokbokki, and perhaps a lychee soju or two.
Kim opened the Wicker Park spot in May 2024 with her husband, restaurateur Alex Cabrera. Here are her picks for good times around Chicago.
Favorite Restaurant
Ceiba Restaurant: Their flavors are so delicious, and the atmosphere is always welcoming.
Favorite Dish
The sushi and overall presentation at Omakase Yume. It’s a full sensory experience: artful, fresh, and thoughtfully curated.
Favorite Place to Drink
Lalo’s on Maxwell (owned by her husband): Their margaritas never miss. It’s my go-to spot for casual meetups with family, work friends, or a relaxed night out.
Favorite Place to Shop
Joong Boo Market: It’s where I find the freshest and most unique ingredients that inspire new flavors at home.
Favorite Local Chicago Brand
Perillo BMW: A legacy Chicago brand known for excellence and high standards, both in service and style.
Favorite Place in the City to Bring an Out-of-Town Guest
The Garden of the Phoenix in Jackson Park: It’s peaceful, beautifully maintained, and feels like a hidden gem in the city.
A Person in the Industry You Admire
My golf girlfriends, all Chicago Korean business owners: They’re empowering women through sport and community, breaking barriers and creating space in an industry that needs more diversity and representation.
