Comfort seemed to be the through-line of our most viewed recipes this year, whether it was a simple dish or an elaborate classic that still warmed the home and heart. We're proud to say that two of those homey foods represented Chicago, in both cake and (pizza) pie form. Cook's Illustrated, the parent of America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country, remains a favorite: those two brands are responsible for eight of our top ten recipes.
We've got plenty more recipes at wttw.com/food, and will have plenty more for you in the coming year, too. Until the next one, happy eating, and happy new year!
Hawaiian Macaroni Salad
Not only was this simple, light mayo salad from Cook's Country our most viewed recipe of the year – it was also our most viewed story overall! It does make a perfect side dish for a barbecue or picnic – something to look forward to in the warmer months!
San Diego Fish Tacos
Another warm weather Cook's Country recipe, this one inspired by a fish taco served at a restaurant in sunny San Diego.
Atomic Cake
A South Side of Chicago specialty, atomic cake features a towering array of layers that include various cakes, custards, creams, and fruits. We have a recipe adapted from one bakery's version, accompanied by an investigation into the cake's origins.
Chicago Thin-Crust Pizza
Cook's Country might call this recipe "Chicago thin-crust pizza," but we Chicagoans know what that really means: tavern-style. It's currently having a moment, as people recognize that Chicagoans eat more tavern-style than deep dish – and that it's delicious.
Updated Beef Wellington
Winter is a great time to take on a big cooking project, and this updated version of a beef Wellington from America's Test Kitchen is a good contender: they suggest making it over three days. This recipes seems to be especially popular over the holidays.
Greek Chicken
While Cook's Country may have been inspired by a version of this lemony, herby chicken in Alabama, it could also be said to approximate the famous chicken Kalamata served at the Athenian Room in Chicago's Lincoln Park.
Tater Tot Hotdish
Now this is a winter dish: a casserole consisting of protein and vegetables in a creamy sauce topped with a starch, in this case tater tots. It's a classic from the Upper Midwest, in a version from Cook's Country.
Classic Chewy Oatmeal Cookies
Sometimes simple is perfect, as in this version of an icon from America's Test Kitchen. Maybe wait until you've finished all your holiday cookies and desserts first.
Chicken Rollatini with Provola and Artichokes
Lidia Bastianich adapted the Americanized Italian dish rollatini to feature chicken instead of eggplant, for a comforting sort of inverse chicken parmesan.
Blueberry Jam Cake
This stunning, summery cake from Cook's Country is a showstopper, with its gradated frosting. How could you not want to eat such a beautiful cake?
